College Sailing Seminar and Holiday Party!

LMSS is inviting you to join us this winter for a College Sailing Seminar and Holiday Party!

The goal of this event is to get our current high school sailors together with current and former college sailors. We want to get the high school sailors fired up about college sailing, and help them make more educated decissions when looking at schools.

It will be a night of fun and food, and a chance to get together to reminisce about college sailing.

We are inviting many great sailors with MYC and LMSS ties to share what college sailing means to them. We would love for you to come by, grab a bite to eat and share your knowledge with the next generation of college sailors.

When & Where:
December 23rd, 2010
6:00 - 9:00 PM
Minnetonka Community Center (Williston Rd. & Minnetonka Blvd)

Hope you can make it!

I hope you are all full and content from a delicious turkey feast! As we all know Thanksgiving weekend marks the end to fall sailing. The UofM sail race team has successfully wrapped up a season to brag about! Highlights included:

Coach Cappy inducted into ICSA Hall of Fame

Allison Prange won Women's Singlehand Quals, Natalie Sinn took 3rd, and Matt Thompson finished 2nd in the men's division. All moved on to compete in Singlehand Nationals in Florida.

Matt, Allison, Kirstin Wilson, and Brady Solum qualifed earlier in the season for Team Race Nationals in Chicago (Yes, not in Detroit!). They traveled to Kings Point, New York where they sailed at the US Merchant Marine Academy.

Congrats to the UofM Gophers on their excellent performance! If you have not done so already, please place your donation with the Booster Club to help out the team. A little bit goes a long way!

Sailing Gophers make History!

The University of Minnesota Sailing Team made history the past nine days. Allison Prange became the first U of M women to win the MCSA Single-handed Conference Championship the weekend of October 16-17. Hosted by the University of Minnesota and sailed from the Wayzata Community Sailing Center, Allison left no doubt she was the best after seven tough races in big breeze on Saturday and two tactical races on Sunday. Natalie Sinn took second, both are headed to Nationals along with Matt Thompson who took third for the Men. Matt Thompson will make his second trip to the nationals and it is the Gophers 9th time in the past 11 years we have qualified for the mens single-handed championship. The ICSA National Single-handed Championships are being hosted by the University of Southern Florida and held at the St. Petersburg Yacht Club November 5-7.

The University of Minnesota Sloop team of; Matt Thompson, Brady Solum, Allison Prange, and Kirstin Wilson competed in the MCSA Sloop Conference Championship in Chicago October 23-24. After multiple rounds of racing, the team made the finals and finished second and are headed to Nationals! The format of the National Sloop Championship was changed last winter from fleet racing to match racing. The sailing team will compete in the ICSA National Sloop Championship in Sonar's at the U. S. Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point November 19-21.
Four days of racing in the past nine days, three national championship births, GO GOPHERS!

To show that our team has depth and a bright future; Freshman Ryan Grosch and Junior Emma Gantzer who were teamed with Freshman Drake Lundeen and Freshman Sarah Ellis sailed to an impressive win at the University of Saint Thomas Cup fleet race hosted at the Wayzata Community Sailing Center on the same weekend has our top sailors were qualifying for Sloops. Not only did they win, our second team of Tom Cramer, Maddie Hoover, Aaron Martinson, Dave Chapin, Allison Forbes, and Lauren Rieves placed 2nd!

Alumni Tim Krech takes 2nd @ C Nationals in New York

Congratulations Minnesota alumni Tim Krech, Anne Scheuerman, and Wiscos Bre Schmidt Krech on their 2nd place finish at Chautauqua Lake!

The team made the 15 hour trek to Chautauqua, New York where they encountered shifty winds and a decorated fleet. Competitors included Inland Champions Andy Burdick, Paul Reilly, and top MYC sparring partners Jason Ostbye and Hans Dickel. 6 races were sailed over the course of Friday and Saturday; one throwout was awarded. The team finished the event with an impressive 15 points, just 4 points shy of the leader.

Womens Nationals - Madison May25-28th

Gopher women; Allison, Amberose, Emma, Kate, Natalie, KK along with coach Dave traveled to Wisconsin, Madison last week to compete in Women's ICSA Nationals. As many may have already heard, there was not enough wind to get races off neither Tuesday nor Wednesday.

Vice Commodore, Allison Prange describes the event. "Tuesday and Wednesday were just a series of waiting games. A's were sent out and brought back in about 5 times on Tuesday, only starting one race which was later called off once the wind died (though we were beating Wisco at the time... so I think we would have beat them overall... haha). Sitting in the sun from 8:30-7 took its toll on us all. We came home and passed out early hoping to get some sailing in on Wednesday.
A's went out early on Wednesday morning, with enough wind to get to the line only for it to completely die again. We sat for 30 minutes on the water and were sent back in. They held us on shore until about 6pm when a storm started to come through and it was determined that there was not enough time to complete a full regatta so Semi's was called off."

The final 18 teams for Womens was than determined by the old formula placing MN one spot out of qualifying from their district (MCSA). While the two days of no sailing and loosing a chance at Nationals were disappointing for the ladies, they certainly were able to make the best of it. The team was given the opportunity to participate in a clinic the following two days held by female olympic gold medalist Anna Tunnicliffe. Coming off the water they all agreed that Anna was a, "fantastic teacher and that it was one of the most beneficial experiences of our college sailing careers".

Congratulations Gophers on a successful season! Happy sailing this summer! Farewell to Seniors Amberose Kramer, Kate Hockins, and Nick Hovland

Gopher Invite Success

Congratulations Gophers for putting on a great event this past weekend at WCSC! Here is the updated report and final scores from Vice Commodore Allison Prange.

We were pleased to see a lot of sun and warm weather for the weekend, though these great conditions brought little wind. Saturday started with glassy water so sailors were postponed on shore until the race committee saw a steady breeze of 3.5 knots or higher. A division eventually got in a total of 3 races with B's getting two in on Saturday. Sunday began with promising breeze which eventually began throwing 45 degree shifts for the race committee to compensate for. Despite the difficult wind conditions, each division completed 6 races with a total of 12 races being sailed for the regatta.

We would like to thank all of our volunteers- Carl Locker, Robbie Virnil, Andrea Porter, Mark Dunsworth, Mike Schmidt, Mark Swift, Megan Zweber, Tricia Towey, Mr. and Mrs. Wilson and all of the Gopher sailors.

Congratulations to Minnesota Gold, a team of Nick Hovland, Kate Hockin, Matt Thompson and Tom Cramer, for winning the event!

We are sad to see our seniors go!

Team Race Qualifiers @ Wisco

This weekend 7 of us headed to UW Madison to compete at Team Race Qualifiers. Saturday was a windy day, with an average of about 20-25 mph wind. The weather went from sunny to hailing more times than once and the temperatures were crazy cold. Despite all these factors the race committee got two full rotations in. The team performed very well (but definitely could have benefitted from some more alternates to save energy). Considering Brady, Matt and I have never practiced team racing together we were able to pull very strong moves and hold our own. Our shining moment was our unexpected win over Wisconsin in the first set- it was looking pretty rough at the first mark as we were holding a 2-3-6. KK and I were in the back getting battled by Wisco's two trailing boats, and despite our turtle from a squall and a quick team racing move, the boys were able to pull a 1-2, so all we had to do was right our boat and finish. With some effort and a lot of cheering we got the boat up and beat Wisconsin!

That little highlight was just one of the MANY awesome things that the team was able to put together this weekend. At the end of the first day we were tied with Northwestern for 2nd (the final qualifying spot for Nationals). Unfortunately, there was no wind on Sunday- virtually opposite conditions from Saturday- not allowing a sail off between the two of us moving to the next tie breaker (whichever team beat the other more times) which went to Northwestern.

Though we didn't qualify, we were very proud of our performance and look forward to improving for next year! Job well done to Matt, Braden, Allison, Natalie, Kate, KK and Emma- may your muscles recover quickly.

Happy Sailing

Gopher Women Qualify!

(Ladies team: Amberose Kramer, Emma Gantzer, Allison Prange, Kirstin Wilson, Kate Hockins, Natalie Sinn)

I am very excited and proud to be posting today that the U of M ladies qualified for semi nationals this past weekend at the University of Illinois. They sailed 7 races in each division placing 3rd overall. It came down to the last leg of B division to determine who would go on to semis, Northwestern or Minnesota. Natalie Sinn managed to squeeze ahead of NW (having to move from 5th to 3rd) and finished a boat ahead to tie Northwestern and win the tiebreaker. Congratulations to our womens team! Good luck and sail fast at Wisco!!

Not to mention the boys also swept Wisconsin 3 Way this weekend! Not too shabby Gophers...not too shabby =) Results to follow.

Wet Your Willie Results - Northwestern

REGATTA HIGHLIGHTS:

Sunshine prevailed throughout the weekend, bringing a balmy 65 degrees on Saturday. Strong winds of 14-18 knots out of the southwest quickly built and gusts of 27 knots forced racing to be called for the day. Only 6 of 16 races were run on Saturday.

Sunday brought calmer winds between 8-10 knots out of the Northeast and slightly colder 50 degree weather with partly cloudy skies. All races were windward-leeward twice around courses. No protests were filed although some breakdowns and redresses were heard by the judges.

In Memory of Bradley Burgum

(Singlehand Nationals, St. Petersburg FL 2003, Singlehand Nationals Wayzata, MN 2004)

In Memory of Bradley Burgum
January 3rd, 1952 – February 14th, 2010

The sudden passing of Bradley Burgum came on February 14th, 2010. Brad and his family have given generously to the U of MN Sail Race Team over the years and we take this opportunity to thank the Burgum Family and offer our deepest condolences. Brad and wife of 34 years, Julie, resided in Casselton, ND where he lived a life as a successful business man, a leader among his community, and a loving family man. Brad’s list of achievements and passions for public service were numerous and began when he created the Casselton Ambulance Service in 1978 and served as a volunteer EMT for over 30 years. He had a long successful career as the city attorney for Casselton and CPA. The enormous impact Brad had on the community and entire region was evident as respects and a celebration of Brad’s life were had at his funeral, Saturday, February 20, where the entire town of Casselton filled two local churches (with live broadcast). Brad taught his two sons, James and Ben, his love of sailing at their family cabin on Pelican Lake, ND, sailing C scows for many years. Ben was a member and captain of the U of MN Sail Race Team from Fall 2000 to Fall 2004, competing in seven national championships and was twice an all-district skipper. He continued his participation with the team as our Coach from Spring 2006 to Fall 2008 and is a current member of our Alumni Association. Just this past January, Ben and Katie graciously hosted our first gathering as a kickoff to our U of MN Sailing Team Alumni Association. Similar to our teammate Ben, his dad was a great supporter of our Gopher sailors and a true gentleman.
